SPUTNIK ZURICH is a manufacturer of reflective bags and fashion based in Zurich, Switzerland. Established in 2012 by owners Stefanie Sixt and Chelsea Morrissey, SPUTNIK ZURICH's aim is to design functional urban design with a beautiful simple construction and minimal form.
Chelsea and Stefanie came together to develop an open design platform transforming recycled safety vests from urban construction sites into functional bags for city dwellers. Using Zurich as their inspiration, they enjoy developing new ideas and concepts reacting to the city and the needs of the people living in it.
The bags are the product of a sustainable production cycle; a product which is from the city, for the city. The subtle change of context of the safety clothing affects the street scene and should bring people together while drawing interest and attention to the urban development of the city. This production cycle could be applied to any city, functioning as a localized satellite of the larger concept, thus the company's name: SPUTNIK ZURICH.
SPUTNIK ZURICH as a synonym for "companion and protection". Sputnik [ˈsput.nʲik] ( Спутник, a russian word meaning "satellite" or literally "fellow traveler" ) was the name of the first soviet satellites reaching the earth orbit.
